The drop forging process can be performed with the material at various temperatures. Hot Forging: During hot forging the metals are heated to above their recrystallization temperature. The main benefit of this hot forging is that work hardening is prevented due to the recrystallization of the metal as it begins to cool. Cold Forging: Cold Forging is generally performed with metal at room temperature below the the recrystallization temperature. Cold forging typically work hardens the metal. There are two types of drop forging, open die and closed die. Open die drop forging requires the operator to position the work piece while it is impacted by the ram. The die attached to the ram is usually flat or of a simple contour, most of the shaping is achieved by the operator physically positioning the work piece before each stroke of the ram. There are also special dies which can be used to cut the metal, form holes or notches.

Skate bearings can be used for most applications within the industry, skateboards, scooters, quads, longboards and inlines all use the same sized bearings, some bearings are measured on an ABEC scale ranging from 1 to 11 (in odd numbers) with 11 being the highest precision, however this does not account for the grade of material used which is also very important to the speed of a bearing. 2 bearings are used per wheel with a spacer in the middle. As usual all the best brands can be found at Skatehut. We supply good quality bearings at a low price. Last time i bought some bearings from a local supplier the old boy who worked there said he had done research in a previous job into bearings in similar applications to suspension i.e applications where the bearing never does a full rotation and the conclusion was that within reason any bearing will perform the same. The only difference comes from better sealing from the elements in a bike application. He seemed to think that bushings were the best option on bikes as you dont get a point load which in hindsight is what full sussers used to use and bearings kits were an "upgrade". Interestingly I don't remember ever having a problem with bushings.

The inner and outer ring raceways are segments of cones and the rollers are also made with a taper so that the conical surfaces of the raceways and the roller axes if projected, would all meet at a common point on the main axis of the bearing. When a roller slides rather than rolls, it can generate wear at the roller-to-race interface, i.e. the differences in surface speeds creates a scrubbing action. Wear will degenerate the close tolerances normally held in the bearing and can lead to other problems. Much closer to pure rolling can be achieved in a tapered roller bearing and this avoids rapid wear. The rollers are guided by a flange on the inner ring. This stops the rollers from sliding out at high speed due to their momentum. The larger the half angles of these cones the larger the axial force that the bearing can sustain. Tapered roller bearings are separable and have the following components: outer ring, inner ring, and roller assembly (containing the rollers and a cage). The non-separable inner ring and roller assembly is called the cone, and the outer ring is called the cup. Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup.
